Reading has always been something that I have identified myself with.  In high school I'm pretty sure I was known as the girl who always had a book (or three) in her backpack and always preferred reading to actually listening to the lecture.  As I got older things didn't change much, though I must admit I became a little bit lazier when it came to my book selection.  I am a creature of habit.  I admit that I read the same books over and over, struggling to leave my favorites behind.  I am terrified of trying new authors (silly, I know) and worry that I will hate the piece.  I know I am missing out on so much amazing work!  I am making a point to start a book list, and work my way through it.  Right now I am reading Harry Potter, book 5 and Pride and Prejudice.  After these, I'm not sure yet!

A few I am interested in:

The Dry Grass of August -- Anna Jean Mayhew
The Perks of Being a Wallflower -- Stephen Chbosky

I love all types of reads, fantasy and period work are some of my favorites. I also love gritty, creepy stories and am really wanting to find a few good mysteries.

What are some of your favorite books?  Any suggestions to add to my list?

  2. The Perks of Being A Wallflower is pretty interesting. I read it in college as part of an adolescent psychology class.

My faves are Harry Potter and, going in a completely different direction, the collective works of the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen.

    Just finished Bossypants, too. Hilarious!

  3. I'm a book lover too. As an only child, books were important to me. I could go anywhere, and be anyone (Nancy drew was my favorite). When I read about Nancy, I was brave and smart and fearless, too. Thanks, Nancy!

  4. I too am an avid bookie...I always have to make sure my handbag is sizeable enough to carry whatever book I am reading at the moment. Admittedly...I love teen fiction...no idea why. I was and still am in love with the Percy Jackson series, it's a great way to delve into greek mythology without getting too textbook and boring, and my other fave is the Tiger's Curse series. The third in the series comes out in November...so excited! :)

  5. I love your blog! Thank you so much for using one of my photographs! I am also an avid reader with a fierce devotion to Jane Austen. Something you might enjoy are the Jane Austen mystery series by Stephanie Barron. They are really well written and engaging. Thanks Again!

  8. I have a couple of recommendations for you...Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link has a bit of fantasy, really great quirky stories, and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, set in Germany during WWII, about a girl who loves to read books and her encounters with Death, who is the narrator...beautifully written.

And if you're worried about committing to a new book and a new author, you can always check it out of the library. If you hate it, you can just return it:) But you won't be disappointed with the two I mentioned; I promise.

  9. Definitely Ursula K. Leguin. She is a fantasy genius! I have liked all of her books so far, and she has quite a bit out there.

  10. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is my all-time fave... and I must admit, it was a revelation to me when I decided just because I START a book doesn't mean I have to FINISH it. If you try a new author, after giving it a reasonable chance, if you hate it, just move on to another one! Life is TOO short to read bad books!

  16. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is super great. You should read anything by John Green. His book, Paper Towns, literally changed my life. His writing is so relatable and nerdy and totally beautiful :)
