Charlotte - The Itsy Bitsy Spider

This morning I woke up and checked the weather. Eighty five degrees and sunny today!  Wow!  I went around the house and closed all the windows and then turned on my two window AC units, one in the dining room and one in the living room.  Outside the window in the dining room, right above the AC I noticed a big web with a scary looking spider in the center!  After freaking out and running away (yeah, I'm a big chicken) I crept back over to investigate.  Despite being big and scary looking she is really cool looking!  I did some research and figured out she is a barn spider.  Charlotte from "Charlotte's Web" is also a barn spider, hence mine's name. :P

Barn Spider Facts

Nocturnal
Creates typical "round" webs
Tears down the web everyday and rebuilds a new one at night
The spider eats the web to conserve resources
Common in Northeast US and Canada
Usually found outside of structures, on boats and in barn rafters
Mostly found in late summer and autumn

I'm pretty excited to watch Charlotte throughout the day!  So far she has eaten some sort of bug (I think it was a fly) and is now starting to eat her web.  I'm guessing it's almost nap time for her!

Hope you guys don't mind my little spider post and aren't too grossed out.  :P

  2. That must be a very busy spider to redo a web every day.

  3. Eeeeeeeeew! Run away!

We had a black widow living outside one of our windows for about a month. And we live on the top floor of our building, so I guess it enjoyed the workout.

  4. he he...not many scary spiders here, I've graduated to being able to even pick a few up and fling 'em out the window every now and again....it does depend on the size though!
